Newborn Photography: What to Expect & How to Prepare

Welcoming a new baby into the world is one of the most special moments in life, and capturing those early days with professional photography ensures you’ll have beautiful memories to cherish forever. If you're considering a newborn photoshoot but aren’t sure what to expect, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know - from when to book your session to how to prepare on the day.

About Clare Barker Newborn Photographer

I’m Clare, a specialist newborn photographer based in Leeds and the owner of Clare Barker Photography. With years of experience working with babies, I create timeless, heartfelt images that capture those fleeting early days. My studio is designed to be a warm, relaxing space where parents can sit back and enjoy the experience while I gently pose and photograph their little one.

When Should You Book a Newborn Photoshoot?

The best time to book your newborn session is during your pregnancy, ideally in the second or third trimester. Most photographers schedule newborn sessions within the first two weeks after birth (usually between days 5–14), as this is when babies are at their sleepiest and most easily posed. However, older newborns can still be photographed beautifully, with more awake moments and expressions.

What to Expect During Your Newborn Photoshoot Session

Newborn photography sessions are designed to be calm, relaxed, and entirely baby-led. Here’s what you can typically expect:

  • A Warm & Cozy Environment – To keep your little one comfortable, the studio will be softly heated, creating a womb-like warmth that encourages sleep.
  • Plenty of Time – Newborn sessions usually last between 2–3 hours to allow for feeding, settling, and gentle posing. There’s no rush, your baby’s needs come first.
  • Minimal Effort from You – As a parent, your main role is to sit back and relax while I carefully and safely position your baby for those adorable curled-up poses.
  • A Stress-Free Experience – Don’t worry if your baby is unsettled - this is completely normal! I allow plenty of time for feeding, cuddling, and soothing so that we can work at your baby’s pace. My goal is to create a calm, enjoyable experience for you and your little one.

How to Prepare for Your Newborn Photoshoot

- Feed Baby Just Before the Shoot
A full tummy means a happy, settled baby. Whether breastfeeding or bottle-feeding, give your baby a good feed right before the session starts.

- Dress Baby in Loose Clothing
Avoid outfits that need to be pulled over the head to prevent disturbing them when undressing. A simple onesie is perfect.

- What to Wear as Parents
If you're planning to be in a few shots, opt for soft, neutral colours that complement your baby and create timeless, natural images. Avoid bold patterns and logos.

- Bring the Essentials
Pack extra nappies, wipes, a dummy (if your baby uses one), and a spare outfit just in case. If siblings are joining, bring snacks or quiet activities to keep them entertained.

Why a Newborn Photoshoot is Worth It

Babies change so quickly in those first few weeks, and having professional images allows you to freeze this fleeting moment in time. Whether it’s their tiny fingers, sleepy smiles, or delicate eyelashes, these details will soon change - but your photos will last forever.
