Do I Need a Support Pillow for My IKEA Highchair?

Do I need a support pillow for my ikea highchair blog post

There’s a common myth about the IKEA highchair cushion — that it’s just for comfort. That leads to lots of people asking why it doesn’t have any bottom padding. While it does add a little comfort, the main purpose of the support pillow is actually for posture and positioning, especially in the early weaning stages.

The inflatable plastic support pillow (available separately — just add one when choosing your highchair cushion cover) is ideal for babies beginning their weaning journey. At this stage, your little one might not yet have full core strength, so a pillow helps them stay upright and secure in the highchair — an essential part of safe and successful weaning.

When I first bought the IKEA highchair in 2016, I was honestly a bit confused about the inflatable cushion. I expected a foam insert — but over time, I came to understand its purpose. It’s designed to gently deflate as your baby grows, offering support early on but gradually adjusting as they gain strength. Plus, it’s much more hygienic than foam, which would soak up all the mess (yikes!).

Here’s how the IKEA support pillow works: when your baby first starts weaning, it should be fully inflated to provide maximum support. As your baby grows stronger and more stable, you can deflate it slightly to allow more room while still offering support. This helps maintain good posture and makes eating and swallowing easier and safer — no slumping!

But Doesn’t My Baby Need Padding on the Bottom?

Actually, no! Padding on the base can cause more problems than it solves. It reduces leg space and can cause your baby to grow out of the highchair much faster. Also — let’s be honest — most babies come with their own natural bottom padding in the form of a nappy! 😉
